December 2003 Grand Canyon Adventure |
Here are some pictures of our trip to the Grand Canyon. Myself, my brother George, his wife Sandi, and two of our friends, Bert and Daniel decided to hike into the canyon the first day, spending the second day at the Phantom Ranch (bottom of the canyon) and hiking out on the third day. These pictures show a small part of our great adventure!
Colorado River from Hermit's Rest.
Grand view from the rim.
The view is always changing.
On the trail - can you see us? We started our hike on the Bright Angel Trail with
plans to cut across the Tonto Trail to the South Kaibab Trail and then down to the river.
Snack time - keeps the energy up
Can you see how steep and rought the trail is?
Indian Gardens where we will stop for a rest...and a snack.
Beautiful view at Indian Gardens. We talked with several hikers who were headed up from the bottom.
We left Indian Gardens and picked up the Tonto Trail. This trail crosses the plateau and meets up with the South Kaibab Trail which will take us to the bottom and our home for the next several days.
Almost to Pipe Springs where we will have lunch. On the top of that cliff is one of the observation
points.
A spectacular side canyon as we head for the Kaibab Trail and the river.
Our destination...Phantom Ranch. We still have a way to go.
There's the Colorado River. It looks like some set from 'Lord of the Rings.'
We made it. Here's my Christmas decorated cabin at the Phantom Ranch.
Inside my cabin...very rustic, but the bed felt good after all that hiking.
Next morning we took a hike along the Bright Angel Creek.
Along the creek we found a really cool side canyon and decided to explore. It required some climbing
but was worth it.
After seeing this we started calling our special canyon...Mickey Canyon.
Here is a close up of some of the rock. The water smoothed it and left these beautiful patterns.
Resting after our climb...eating again!
Our warm spot in the sun.
Headed back to Phantom Ranch, its still fall at the bottom.
This buck didn't even look up as we passed.
On the way to the bath house.
Our eating establishment...everything served family style.
Bert, Sandi and George...proving we made it.
Daniel, a first timer.
Me....look at that smile.
Heading out - we started on the trail in the dark - here's the first sign of the sun.
Good look at some of the work being done on the trail.
WOW!
We followed this stream all the way to Indian Gardens.
Speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil and what?
Bert in the lead.
Half way up...lunch at Indian Gardens.
What a view!.
Now that's blue!
Almost at the top.
We'll make it.
One last view....what a trip!
